Xanthos was the political heart of Lycia. The ruins spread on two hills above the river: a Roman theatre, Byzantine basilica, agora, and the Harpy Tomb still in situ. Much of the carved work now sits in the British Museum, but the scale of the city and its stubborn history — the Lycians burned their wealth rather than surrender, twice — are still readable in the stones. Allow time to drive from Fethiye (about 45 minutes) and pair with Letoon nearby.

For the capital of Lycia and a UNESCO site most coast visitors skip.

Local tip

Start on the lower acropolis near the theatre — signage is thin and the heat on the upper hill is exposed by midday.

Accessibility

Uneven ancient stone paths; significant walking between upper and lower sites.
