Muğla Old Town
Muğla's old quarter, with stone houses and the Ulu Camii, makes a quiet inland stop between coastal resorts.
Muğla's old neighbourhood sits in the provincial capital, 660 metres above sea level and a world away from the busy Aegean shore. Narrow lanes wind past well-preserved stone houses, their wooden shutters painted in faded blues and greens. At the centre, the modest Ulu Camii provides a focal point.
For travellers driving between Marmaris, Akyaka, or Fethiye, this is a calm place to stretch your legs and grab a simple lunch. A few lokantas serve home-style dishes, and the air feels cooler than the coast, especially in summer.
There are no grand monuments, just a genuine, lived-in Anatolian town where you can wander, sit with a tea, and watch daily life unfold.
“To see an inland Aegean town with stone houses and a peaceful mosque, far from beach crowds.”
Park in the newer part of town and walk uphill; the lanes around Ulu Camii are calmest after the midday prayer.
Cobbled, sloping streets make wheelchair access difficult.
