Marmaris Marina & Old Town
A yacht-lined bay backed by pine hills, with a lanes-and-bougainvillea old quarter climbing to a small Ottoman castle.
Marmaris sits where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, its deep bay ringed by forested hills. The seafront is all masts and gulets, but a few streets back the old town keeps its shape — narrow lanes, whitewashed walls and bougainvillea rising to the 16th-century castle that Süleyman the Magnificent rebuilt as a staging point for the siege of Rhodes. The castle courtyard now holds a small archaeology museum with a long view over the marina.
“To swap the busy seafront for quiet old-town lanes climbing to a castle over the bay.”
Start up the castle lanes before 10am; they are shaded and empty then, and the marina view is straight into the morning light.
The old-town lanes are steep and cobbled; the seafront promenade is flat and step-free.
