Marmaris Castle
A hilltop fortress rebuilt by Suleiman the Magnificent, now the town's archaeological museum with harbour views.
Suleiman the Magnificent rebuilt this castle in 1522 as a staging point for his campaign against Rhodes, on foundations that may reach back to antiquity. Its restored halls now hold the Marmaris Archaeological Museum, with finds from nearby ancient sites, while the ramparts and courtyard give the best vantage over the old town's tangle of lanes and the yacht-filled bay below.
“For the clearest view over Marmaris harbour and a compact museum inside Ottoman walls.”
Climb up through the old bazaar streets in the late afternoon, then stay for sunset over the marina.
Steep, narrow lanes and steps up to the castle; interior has uneven stone floors.
