Gemiler Island (St. Nicholas Island)
A wooded island of Byzantine churches and cisterns, reached by boat — said to be a stop on the route carrying St. Nicholas's relics.

Setting
Outdoor
Entry note: Boat trip from Ölüdeniz or Kayaköy coast; small landing fee sometimes collected on the island.
Gemiler Adası rises steeply from the channel between Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy. Four church ruins, house foundations, and water cisterns climb the ridge, linked by a marked trail with sea views on both sides. Boats anchor in the small bay; you wade or hop ashore. The site is less polished than Ephesus but far quieter, and the swim back to the boat is part of the routine.
“For Byzantine ruins you reach by boat, with a swim in the same trip.”
Local tip
Wear shoes with grip — the stone path between churches is smooth marble in places and slippery after rain.
Accessibility
Boat access only; steep island paths with steps.
