Rumeli Fortress
A medieval Ottoman fortress on the European shore of the Bosphorus, offering walks along the ramparts with wide views of the strait.
Rumeli Fortress sits on hills in Sarıyer along the European side of the Bosphorus. This medieval Ottoman stronghold was built to control ship traffic through the strait. Its massive towers and long battlements are open to visitors. You can climb the steep stone steps to the top for wide views of the waterway.
The courtyard is used as an open-air concert venue in summer. The terrain is steep, with uneven surfaces, so good shoes are a must. Entry costs TL 250.
“Climb a medieval fortress for some of the best Bosphorus views, free of museum crowds.”
Arrive right at 9am opening to have the walls almost empty; weekends bring long ticket queues.
