Anadoluhisarı, historically known as Güzelce Hisar, is a medieval Ottoman fortress on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. It's the oldest surviving Turkish architectural structure in Istanbul, dating from the early Ottoman period. The fortress sits right on the water, with a waterfront walkway where you can pause for views of the strait and the European side. The interior isn't always accessible, but the exterior and the surrounding neighbourhood, also named Anadoluhisarı, are free to explore. It's a calm, lived-in spot that feels far from the city's bustle.

Step back to Istanbul’s earliest Ottoman days at the city’s oldest Turkish structure, right on the Bosphorus shore.

Local tip

The fortress gate is usually locked; instead, walk to the wooden pier just north of the castle for tea and a local fishing scene.
