Entry note: Sinan's last great külliye on the Üsküdar hilltop; outside prayer times

Mimar Sinan designed this mosque for Nurbanu Sultan, wife of Selim II, making it one of his last major works. Originally planned in 1571 as a modest single-minaret structure, it expanded significantly and was finally completed in 1586, three years after Nurbanu’s death. The building anchors a large complex that once included a madrasa, guestrooms, and a double caravanserai. Its hilltop position over Üsküdar gives the courtyard sweeping views of the district. Today, the surrounding külliye buildings house cafés and shops, blending daily life with Ottoman heritage. The mosque’s architecture showcases Sinan’s mature style — the spacious prayer hall with a grand dome, fine Iznik tiles, and a serene atmosphere that attracts both worshippers and visitors. The complex remains a lively local hub, especially in the afternoon when the adjacent markets buzz with activity.

Sinan’s late-career hilltop mosque with a vast külliye and quiet courtyard, far from the tourist crowds.

Local tip

The caravanserai now houses several inviting tea gardens; grab a çay and watch Üsküdar life unfold from the hill.
