Yeni Valide Mosque
An 18th-century imperial mosque on Üsküdar’s waterfront, built by Gülnuş Sultan. The last of the grand mosques commissioned by royal Ottoman women in the district.
Yeni Valide Mosque sits right where the ferries dock, its dome and twin minarets greeting you as you step onto the Asian side. Built in the early 1700s for Gülnuş Sultan – the mother of Sultan Ahmed III – it marks the closing chapter of the ‘Sultanate of Women’, when royal mothers and consorts shaped Istanbul’s skyline with their patronage. Though the chief architect was Kayserili Mehmed Ağa, his exact role remains a bit fuzzy. It’s smaller than some imperial mosques, but the waterfront setting gives it a breezy calm that many larger mosques lack. Step inside and you’ll find the typical Ottoman layout: a spacious prayer hall under a single dome, with light filtering through stained glass. It’s rarely crowded, so you can sit quietly on the carpet and watch the ferries glide past through the windows. Afterwards, stroll the short path along the Bosphorus towards the nearby Mihrimah Sultan Mosque; together with Şemsi Paşa, they form a trio that makes for a relaxed self-guided walking tour.
“A quiet imperial mosque right at the ferry landing, offering a moment of calm with views across the Bosphorus.”
After visiting, grab a simit and tea from the vendors right on the pier; you’ll get the best view of the mosque’s waterfront façade while the ferries come and go.
The main entrance has steps; for step-free access, use the side door facing the Bosphorus — it has a small ramp.
