Alanya Castle
A medieval Seljuk castle sprawled across a rocky peninsula with sweeping views of the Mediterranean. Reach it on foot via the winding walls or take the cable car from the harbour.
Alanya Castle drapes over a rocky peninsula that divides the Mediterranean from the city. The Seljuk walls, which date back to the 13th century, enclose the entire headland, and walking along them today gives you a sense of just how strategic this spot once was. The climb up through the narrow streets of the old neighbourhood is part of the experience, although a cable car from the harbour is also available if you prefer a quicker ascent.
Once you reach the castle grounds, you can pay a TL 340 entry fee to access the inner fortress and its exhibition halls. However, the outer walls and most of the peninsula remain free to explore, so you don’t have to buy a ticket to soak in the views or wander the paths. The ramparts overlook a wide arc of coastline, with the city on one side and the Taurus Mountains beyond.
The light here is best in the late afternoon, when the stone turns gold and the cafes inside the walls start filling up with people settling in for sunset. It’s a place for slow wandering rather than ticking off sights.
“Panoramic sea and mountain views from Seljuk-era ramparts that wrap around an entire peninsula.”
Take the cable car up and then walk back down through the old town—your knees will thank you, and you'll pass local houses most tourists miss.
Cobblestone paths and steep staircases make the castle challenging for wheelchair users; the cable car offers a viewpoint but the inner pathways are uneven.
