Myndos Gate
The surviving western gate of ancient Halicarnassus, where Alexander the Great's siege broke through in 334 BC.
Part of the great walls built by Mausolus, the Myndos Gate guarded the road toward the neighbouring city of Myndos. Its twin towers and the moat in front of them were the scene of heavy fighting during Alexander the Great's 334 BC siege of Halicarnassus. Excavation and partial restoration have made the gate, the moat, and a stretch of the city wall legible again, with information panels tracing the siege.
“To trace Alexander the Great's siege lines at the one clearly readable gate of ancient Halicarnassus.”
It sits inland from the marina and sees few visitors — early morning light is kind for photographs of the towers.
Level gravel paths around the gate; some uneven ground near the moat.
