Bodrum Castle
A 15th-century Crusader castle on the harbour, now home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and its famous shipwreck halls.
Built by the Knights Hospitaller from 1402 using stone from the ruined Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Castle of St. Peter guards Bodrum's twin bays. Inside, towers named for the knights' home countries hold the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, whose Bronze Age and Byzantine shipwreck finds are among the most important in the Mediterranean. The ramparts give a clean sweep over the marina and the whitewashed town.
“To walk a Crusader castle and see genuine Bronze Age shipwrecks in the same visit.”
Go late afternoon: the harbour light is best from the English Tower, and the cruise crowds have usually thinned.
Cobbled ramps and stairs between towers; the upper levels are not step-free.
