Ancient Theatre of Halicarnassus
A Hellenistic theatre cut into the hillside above Bodrum, one of the oldest in Anatolia and still used for summer concerts.
Carved into the slope of Göktepe in the 4th century BC and later enlarged by the Romans, this theatre once seated around 13,000 spectators. Its stone tiers frame a wide view over the bay, the castle, and the whitewashed town below. Restored in modern times, it now hosts open-air concerts and festivals through the warm months, so the ancient acoustics still get a workout.
“For the best free panorama of Bodrum's bay from a 2,300-year-old grandstand.”
Climb up for sunset when the town lights come on; check the summer programme in case a concert is on that evening.
Steep stone steps up to and within the theatre; no step-free route to the upper tiers.
