New Mosque (Yeni Cami)
An Ottoman imperial mosque on the Golden Horn, marking the passage from the historic peninsula to Beyoğlu. Completed in the 1660s, it reflects the power of the Sultanate of Women.
Rising at the southern foot of the Galata Bridge, the New Mosque is a 17th-century imperial complex completed between 1660 and 1665. Despite its name, it took decades to finish, and its full name — New Valide Sultan Mosque — honours the queen mothers who saw it through. The mosque sits right at the water’s edge in Eminönü, where it anchors the crossing point between the old city and Beyoğlu.
Its courtyard and domes form a familiar Istanbul silhouette. The interior is a calm break from the neighbourhood’s relentless bustle, with İznik tiles and broad, light-filled spaces. It’s a notable landmark from the Sultanate of Women period, when valide sultans held exceptional political influence.

Use the side gate from the Spice Bazaar square to dodge the main entrance crowds, then grab a seat in the courtyard to watch the ferries.
