Sultanahmet Jail
A former Ottoman prison just steps from Hagia Sophia, now a luxury Four Seasons hotel. You can walk past the historic exterior for free.
This building started its life as Sultanahmet Jail, a prison in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula. Today, it houses the Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet, but its neoclassical facade still anchors the corner of Tevkifhane Street. The building’s conversion preserved the original layout around a central courtyard, now a manicured hotel garden. From the sidewalk you can see the arched windows and heavy stonework that once kept inmates inside, a stark contrast with the soft jazz drifting from the lobby.
“See a century-old prison turned into one of Istanbul’s poshest hotels, steps from the Blue Mosque.”
For a quieter look at the old prison walls, walk along Soğukçeşme Sokağı behind the hotel.
Sidewalks around the building are step-free but covered with uneven historic cobblestones.
