Binbirdirek Cistern
The second largest underground cistern in Istanbul, with double-tiered columns and a quieter atmosphere than its famous neighbour.
Binbirdirek (1001 Columns) is the city's second largest covered cistern, built in the 4th century. It once held water for the nearby palaces and baths. Today you walk among 224 marble columns stacked two-high, linked by arches in a dim, cavernous hall that stays cool even in August.
The restoration added a modern walkway and soft lighting, so you can see the brick vaults and ancient Greek inscriptions on the columns up close. It's far less busy than the Basilica Cistern, which means you can take your time without feeling rushed.
You enter from a narrow side street between Çemberlitaş and Sultanahmet. The small door is easy to miss, but once you descend the steps, the space opens up into an unexpected underground forest of stone.
“A calm, meditative underground forest of marble columns without the Basilica Cistern queues.”
The entrance is on İmran Öktem Sokak, next to the back of the Çemberlitaş Hamamı; late afternoons on weekdays you'll practically have it to yourself.
