Entry note: Former Silahtarağa power plant campus — energy museum, contemporary exhibitions, and cafés; ticketed sections vary

The Silahtarağa power station, the Ottoman Empire's first, now serves a different kind of energy. Since 2007, it's been Santralİstanbul, an arts and cultural complex inside the Istanbul Bilgi University campus. You’ll find an energy museum where the original turbines are preserved, a library, an amphitheatre, and temporary exhibitions. It’s a calm campus by the water, where the Alibeyköy and Kağıthane streams join the Golden Horn. There are cafés, and some areas are free to wander; others require a ticket.

To see the original turbine hall of the Ottoman Empire's first power plant, now part of a lively university arts campus.

Local tip

Skip the weekend; on a quiet weekday you can explore the turbine hall almost alone and then have tea by the water.
