Nuruosmaniye Mosque
An 18th-century Ottoman mosque just outside the Grand Bazaar, on Turkey's tentative UNESCO list since 2016.
You'll find the Nuruosmaniye Mosque right at the edge of the Grand Bazaar, a few steps from the Çemberlitaş tram stop. It's easy to combine with a wander through the bazaar, and entry is free. Because it's an active mosque, you'll need to dress modestly—headscarves and wraps are provided at the door—and plan around the five daily prayer times when the interior closes to visitors for about half an hour.
Built in the 18th century, the mosque marks a notable shift in Ottoman architectural style and was added to Turkey's Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2016. The name Nuruosmaniye means 'Light of Osman,' referencing Sultan Osman III, but the mosque is most appreciated today for its calm courtyard and the moment of quiet it offers in the middle of a busy bazaar district.
“Sakin, ücretsiz ve UNESCO yolunda bir mola; Kapalıçarşı'nın gürültüsünden hemen sonra.”
Use the side entrance from the bazaar's inner courtyard to slip in quietly; weekdays late morning are the calmest time.
