Istanbul Military Museum
A vast collection of military artefacts from the 13th century to today, still run by the Turkish army. The real pull is the occasional outdoor Mehter (Janissary band) show.
The Military Museum sits in Harbiye, a short walk from Taksim. It's operated by the Turkish Armed Forces, which gives the place a formal, no-frills atmosphere that suits the subject. The ground floor sweeps you from Seljuk chain mail and Ottoman rifles to World War I weapons and modern Turkish army exhibits. The labelling is patchy in places, but the sheer quantity of hardware makes up for it.
The main reason locals come is the Mehter band. When scheduled, the drummers and zurna players march into the courtyard and put on a loud, stirring show that feels more like a ceremony than a touristic performance. It doesn't happen every day, so ring ahead or check online before committing. Without the show, the armour collection and the aircraft in the back garden are still a solid way to spend a slow afternoon.
“To see a live Mehter performance in the courtyard and walk through centuries of Ottoman weaponry.”
The Mehter schedule is erratic—call the museum in the morning to confirm the showtime, and if it’s on, arrive 30 minutes early to claim a spot near the front.
