Harbiye
Harbiye is a leafy cultural strip in Şişli, lined with the grand Military Museum, the Istanbul Congress Center, and several concert halls.
Harbiye is a central Şişli neighborhood known mostly for its cultural axis along Cumhuriyet Caddesi. The massive Ottoman-era Military Museum anchors the area, flanked by the Istanbul Congress Center and a string of concert venues hosting everything from classical orchestras to pop stars.
The neighborhood’s wide sidewalks and tree-lined streets make it one of the more walkable parts of the city. It sits just downhill from Taksim Square, so many visitors wander through without realizing they’ve left Beyoğlu. Even if you’re not visiting a show, the open-air displays of cannons and tanks outside the museum are worth a glance.
Local cafes and university buildings give Harbiye a relaxed, slightly intellectual feel. On a sunny afternoon, it’s a good place to escape the crush of İstiklal Caddesi without going far.
“To catch a concert or wander among cannons and tanks outside the Military Museum without paying a cent.”
The open-air military exhibits outside the museum are free to see anytime; weekdays around noon you'll have them almost to yourself.
Sidewalks along Cumhuriyet Caddesi are wide and mostly step-free; cobblestone sections near the museum can be uneven.
