Osmanbey
A busy shopping strip in Nişantaşı, Osmanbey mixes textile wholesale, high-street brands, and a slice of history at Beth Israel Synagogue.
Osmanbey is one of four neighbourhoods that make up Nişantaşı, the upmarket shopping heart of Şişli. Halaskargazi Caddesi, its main drag, is a mix of international fashion chains, local boutiques and textile wholesalers. This is where Istanbulites come to buy fabric by the metre or hunt for a good deal on ready-to-wear, with Osmanbey metro station making it an easy stop.
Tucked just off the avenue is the Beth Israel Synagogue, built in 1940 and still active. It’s a reminder that the area’s identity extends beyond retail.
Osmanbey also carries a sombre note: journalist Hrant Dink was shot dead outside the Agos newspaper office on Halaskargazi Caddesi in 2007. A plaque now marks the spot, quietly anchoring the neighbourhood’s complicated recent history.
“For fabric by the metre and a real slice of Nişantaşı life, skip the malls and walk Halaskargazi Caddesi.”
Skip the main drag’s chain stores and dive into the side streets around Rumeli Caddesi—that’s where the real fabric shops hide.
Halaskargazi Caddesi has wide, fairly even sidewalks, but side streets narrow quickly with occasional steps and high curbs.
