Büyükada (Princes' Islands)
Büyükada is the largest of the Princes' Islands, just a ferry ride from Istanbul. It's a car-free island with pine forests, old wooden houses, and sea views.
A short ferry from the city brings you to Büyükada, the biggest of the Princes' Islands. With no motorized vehicles allowed (aside from service vehicles), the island is known for its quiet lanes, horse-drawn carriages, and cycling paths. You can walk up to the Greek Orphanage, the second-largest wooden building in Europe, or swim from one of the small beaches. The two main neighborhoods, Maden and Nizam, have plenty of restaurants and tea gardens overlooking the water. On clear days, climbing the island's hills rewards you with views across the Marmara Sea and back toward Istanbul.
“To escape the city noise, ride a bike under pine trees, and eat grilled midye dolma right by the sea.”
Skip the horse-drawn carriage tours on hot afternoons—the animals suffer and it's a slow loop. Rent a bike and explore the quieter back streets of Nizam.
