St. Nicholas Church
A 4th-century Byzantine church in Demre, said to contain the tomb of Saint Nicholas, the inspiration for Santa Claus.
Located in Demre (ancient Myra), this Byzantine church dates back to the 4th century and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites associated with Saint Nicholas. The current structure was built around the 11th century over the original church. Inside, you can see well-preserved frescoes depicting scenes from the saint's life, as well as a marble sarcophagus believed to hold his remains (though many were moved to Bari, Italy). The church was restored in the 19th century and now functions as a museum. Visitors can explore the nave, side chapels, and the crypt. Despite the crowds, the atmosphere remains serene, and the connection to the Santa Claus legend is palpable.
