Zal Mahmud Pasha Mosque
Quiet Sinan-designed mosque from 1590, perched on a slope in Eyüp with fine views of the Golden Horn.
The Zal Mahmud Pasha Mosque was completed in 1590 to a design by Mimar Sinan, the master architect of the Ottoman golden age. It sits on a steep plot in Eyüp, just uphill from the much-visited Eyüp Sultan complex.
Its slender minaret and elegant dome mark a smaller-scale but classic Sinan composition, with Iznik tile panels and a serene interior that reflects his mature period. Because it stands slightly off the main pilgrimage route, it receives far fewer visitors than its famous neighbour, making it a peaceful stop for anyone walking up toward Pierre Loti Hill.
“A peaceful Sinan mosque away from the crowds, where you can admire Iznik tiles in silence.”
Walk five minutes uphill from Eyüp Sultan to this Sinan mosque; it’s usually empty while the main complex is packed.
