Tünel Funicular
The Tünel is a historic underground funicular connecting Karaköy and Beyoğlu. Opened in 1875, it's the world's second-oldest underground urban railway.
This isn't just a quick ride up a hill; it's a trip back in time. The Tünel is a short, rubber-tyred funicular that runs for about 573 meters underground, linking the waterfront at Karaköy with the heart of Beyoğlu. It opened in 1875, making it the second oldest underground urban railway in the world, right after the London Underground.
It's a functional piece of daily life for many, whisking people up the steep slope in under two minutes. While the ride itself is brief, it's a classic Istanbul experience. Use it as a practical shortcut and then spend your time exploring the neighborhoods at either end.
“Ride a piece of living history that's still the quickest way up the hill.”
Buy a single-use token (jeton) from the machine; it's cheaper than using an Istanbulkart for just this one ride.
Both stations have steps. The Karaköy entrance has a steep flight of stairs down from street level.
