Sadberk Hanım Museum
Türkiye's first private museum, in twin waterfront mansions at Büyükdere. The collection spans Anatolian archaeology and Ottoman-era objects, from ancient jewellery to Iznik tiles.
Opened in 1980, the Sadberk Hanım Museum occupies two restored late 19th-century wooden mansions right beside the Bosphorus. It was founded by the Vehbi Koç Foundation in memory of Vehbi Koç's wife Sadberk, making it Turkey's first private museum. The original mansion, known as the Azaryan Yalısı, houses the archaeological section with artefacts dating from the Neolithic to the Byzantine periods. The adjacent Sevgi Gönül Building holds the ethnographic collection, including Ottoman textiles, embroidery, Iznik ceramics, and silver work. Together they offer a quiet, well-curated look at Turkish material culture. The museum is open daily except Wednesdays.
“A calm waterside museum with beautifully displayed antiquities and Ottoman crafts, right on the Bosphorus.”
Don’t skip the Sevgi Gönül Building’s ground floor — it has a tiny tea garden looking straight onto the Bosphorus.
The historic buildings have stairs and no lift; some upper galleries are inaccessible to wheelchair users.
