Pierre Loti Hill
Pierre Loti Hill offers one of the best views of the Golden Horn from its famous hillside café, named after the French writer who spent long hours here.
This hilltop spot in Eyüp is a magnet for anyone wanting to see the Golden Horn curve away toward the old city. The outdoor café, which shares its name with the 19th-century novelist Pierre Loti, has been serving tea and Turkish coffee for decades. Loti himself was a regular, writing and looking out at the water. Today, you’ll find a mix of locals and visitors, especially at sunset. The easiest way up is the Eyüp–Pierre Loti cable car (teleferik), but a steep footpath through the historic cemetery offers a quieter, more atmospheric ascent. Once at the top, grab a table, order a çay, and soak in the view. It’s not a hidden secret, so expect company, particularly on weekends. The café terrace is pay-as-you-go—you only pay for what you order—and there’s no entrance fee for the hill itself. If you walk up, watch your step; the path is uneven and quite steep. Many combine this with a visit to the Eyüp Sultan Mosque below, creating a half-day outing.
“To watch the sun sink into the Golden Horn from Istanbul’s most beloved hilltop teahouse.”
Skip the cable car on the way down and walk the steep path through Eyüp Cemetery; it’s shorter and you’ll pass centuries-old Ottoman tombstones.
