Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque
A late-career masterpiece by Mimar Sinan, built in his 90s, with a serene courtyard near Galataport.
Designed by Mimar Sinan in the twilight of his career, the Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque was completed in 1580 and forms the centrepiece of a külliye that once included a madrasa, hamam and fountain. Sinan was over 90 when he oversaw its construction, and the mosque reflects his mature style with a spacious central dome supported by four semi-domes, creating a luminous prayer hall.
The complex sits at the edge of the Bosphorus in Tophane, now adjacent to the Galataport redevelopment. Its courtyard, shaded by old trees, offers a quiet retreat among the modern bustle. The adjacent hamam, also designed by Sinan, still operates and is a separate paid attraction.
“See how the 90-year-old Sinan distilled a lifetime of architectural wisdom into one calm courtyard mosque.”
Walk 5 minutes to the Istanbul Modern after your visit, or grab a tea at the Tophane nargile cafés across the street.
