The Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam sits inside the former Imperial Stables in Gülhane Park, opened in 2008. Its displays feature reproductions of scientific instruments created by Muslim scholars between the 9th and 16th centuries. Every model was built at the Institute for the History of Arab-Islamic Sciences in Frankfurt, following descriptions and drawings found in period manuscripts.

Because many items are entirely conjectural, or based on diagrams of similar-looking devices with no proof they were ever built, the museum is less about antique objects and more about the inventive spirit of medieval Islamic science. It makes for a quiet, curious stop while you're already exploring the park.

To see beautifully crafted models of medieval Islamic astronomy, medicine, and engineering tools that never actually existed.

Local tip

The elephant water clock replica is the highlight; don't expect many original artefacts—the museum is more about ideas than antiques.
