German Fountain
A neo-Byzantine fountain gifted by Kaiser Wilhelm II, now a landmark on the Hippodrome in Sultanahmet.
The German Fountain (Alman Çeşmesi) stands at the northern end of the Hippodrome of Constantinople, opposite the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed I. It was built to commemorate the second anniversary of German Emperor Wilhelm II's visit to Istanbul in 1898. The fountain was constructed in Germany, shipped piece by piece, and reassembled on its current site in 1900.
The octagonal dome is supported by eight marble columns, and its interior is covered with golden mosaics, giving it a neo-Byzantine character. Though small, it's a popular photo spot and a quick stop on any Sultanahmet walking tour. Its location on the open square means you can view it for free at any time.
“A decorative Ottoman-era gift from the Kaiser, set against the backdrop of the Hippodrome.”
Visit right after the Blue Mosque opens at 9am to have the square nearly to yourself.
Flat square, step-free access from all sides.
