Ataköy
A planned coastal neighborhood in Bakırköy with a marina, art galleries, and a long seaside promenade.
Ataköy is one of Istanbul’s earliest planned satellite towns, built on the Marmara coast in Bakırköy. The neighborhood blends residential blocks with green spaces, a large marina, and a commercial district centered around Galleria Ataköy, the first modern shopping mall in Istanbul. The main draw for visitors is the waterfront: a landscaped coastal walk stretches for kilometers, lined with cafes, fish restaurants, and small art galleries. It’s a favorite local spot for an evening stroll or a lazy weekend brunch. While not a historic district, Ataköy offers a relaxed, modern contrast to the city’s chaotic center. You can watch boats in the marina, see occasional open-air exhibitions, or simply enjoy the sea breeze away from tourist crowds.
“To experience Istanbul’s modern face by the sea, with a long promenade and marina vibe far from tourist crowds.”
Skip the busy Galleria mall and walk west along the shore toward Yeşilköy for a quieter, more scenic stretch.
The coastal promenade is wide, paved, and wheelchair-accessible; some nearby side streets have curbs.
