Kaleiçi (Old Town)

Kaleiçi is the original heart of Antalya, a compact maze of narrow alleys sealed within Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman walls. Ancient stone fortifications still wrap the district, with the best-preserved stretches standing above the old harbour. From Hadrian’s Gate at the eastern entrance, you can trace a route that winds past restored timber-framed Ottoman houses, many now converted into small pensions, boutique hotels, and courtyard cafes.

The district slopes gently towards the marina, where wooden gulets and tour boats bob alongside the quay. The harbour itself is a lively spot for a tea or a beer, especially in the late afternoon when the sun softens the Taurus Mountains on the horizon. Away from the waterfront, the side streets reveal a quieter rhythm: bougainvillea spilling over garden walls, cats napping on warm stone, and the occasional scent of fresh simit drifting from a corner bakery.

Because Kaleiçi is simply a living neighbourhood, entry is free and you can explore at any hour. Some restored house courtyards are privately owned or belong to hotels, but the public lanes, the harbour, and the viewpoints along the walls are open to everyone.
